Grade 3 Math: Fractions as Parts of Objects

In this series of two lessons, students apply their understanding of fractions from representations using a number line to fractions of drawings of objects.

The representation of fractions as parts of objects is introduced after the representation using number lines to prevent the misconception that fractions are related only to dividing objects.

Writing Fractions from Drawings

In this lesson, students learn to identify fractions represented in drawings of objects, including squares, rectangles, and circles. They’re shown representations of both proper fractions and improper fractions, although the terminology of proper and improper fractions is not introduced until a later lesson, and are asked to specify the fraction represented.

Drawing Pictures from Fractions

This lesson is the inverse of the prior lesson. In this lesson, students learn to create representations of fractions by subdividing drawings of geometrical objects, including squares, rectangles, and circles. They’re given fractions in numerical form and must create a representation of that fraction using the drawings of objects.
